We are delighted to share an opportunity with you to help seniors this holiday season! An organization called Second Wind Dreams brings holiday cheer to socially-isolated seniors through its Gifts of Light program. You can help by adopting a senior, volunteering to distribute gifts or making a financial donation.
Who Does Gifts of Light Serve?
This unique program works with nursing homes to identify seniors who would otherwise spend the holidays alone. These individuals don’t have family or friends to visit, an absence felt most acutely during the holiday season. Their needs are simple – basic necessities and comforting items, as well as a little bit of human interaction.
How Can You Help?
SHOP
You can adopt one or more seniors, which involves purchasing items on their wish lists, normally things like socks, soft blankets and sweet treats. Many of these seniors own nothing more than a few worn articles of clothing and a tattered pair of shoes or slippers, so two or three new items go a long way toward putting a smile on their faces.
SHARE
Whether or not you shop for seniors, please consider signing up to play one of Santa’s elves on December 23, 24 or 25. In addition to distributing the gifts, you will brighten these lonely seniors’ days with simple conversations and smiles. Imagine how uplifting a brief visit would be if your only human interaction amounted to busy caregivers washing and dressing you, delivering meal trays and distributing medications. A little bit of your time can make a big difference!
GIVE
If you are short on time or traveling for the holidays, the Gifts of Light program can always use financial donations or any size. Other volunteers will use the funds to shop for more seniors.
